Ant and human numbers
Recent research estimates there are about 20 quadrillion ants on the planet, which is a 2 followed by 16 zeros. With today’s human population around 8–9 billion, that works out to roughly 2.5 million ants for every one person.
Biomass comparison
Even though each ant is tiny, their combined dry biomass is estimated at around 12 million tons of carbon. This is roughly one‑fifth of the total human dry biomass, and exceeds the biomass of all wild birds and mammals combined.
