Coyotes are generally not dangerous to humans, as attacks are very rare. However, coyotes can become a threat if they lose their natural fear of people, especially when they are fed by humans or habituated to urban environments. Children, small pets, and small dogs are more vulnerable to coyote attacks than adults. While there have been only two confirmed fatal attacks on humans in North America, many coyote interactions do not result in serious injury, and most coyotes avoid people. Coyotes tend to be more active around dawn and dusk and may defend their territory if they feel threatened. Measures such as keeping pets indoors at night, securing food sources, and not feeding coyotes can reduce the risk of conflict with them.
