If a member of a group of patrons becomes obviously intoxicated, the server should take the following steps:
- Refuse to serve any more alcohol to the intoxicated patron. It is illegal to serve alcohol to someone who is visibly intoxicated
- Inform the other members of the group that the intoxicated patron will no longer be served alcohol, to maintain transparency and manage the situation calmly
- Offer non-alcoholic drinks and food options to the intoxicated individual, and intervene early and tactfully to prevent further drinking
- Ensure the intoxicated patron leaves the premises safely or is taken to a designated place of safety away from the bar and other drinking patrons, where staff can monitor them
- Communicate with management and other staff to keep an eye on the situation and be prepared to call police if there is any threat to safety
- Document the incident in an incident log immediately, noting the refusal of service and any arrangements made for the patron’s safety
