The University of Tulsa's athletic teams are called the Golden Hurricanes because the nickname originated in 1922. At that time, the football team was wearing new black and yellow uniforms and was initially called the "Yellow Jackets." The coach, Howard Acher, wanted a new nickname as the team was doing well. He first thought of "Golden Tornadoes," inspired by a remark about "roaring through opponents." However, since Georgia Tech had already claimed the name Golden Tornadoes, he evolved the name to "Golden Hurricane." The team voted on this new name before a game against Texas A&M, and it was officially adopted. The "golden" part comes from the color of their jerseys, and "hurricane" was chosen meteorologically as a substitute for tornado, despite Tulsa being landlocked and not typically associated with hurricanes.
