The northern lights will be visible tonight in several northern U.S. states due to heightened geomagnetic activity around the fall equinox on September 22, 2025. States where the aurora borealis can be seen include parts of Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Maine. Alaska is also expected to have strong visibility. These conditions are due to a geomagnetic storm and favorable seasonal geometry around the equinox, with the Kp index predicted to reach around 5, indicating moderate auroral activity. The best viewing will be away from city lights towards the northern horizon after dark and before midnight.
