The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is observed every year on September 30. It is a Canadian day of memorial to recognize the atrocities and multi-generational effects of the Canadian Indian residential school system. This day is also known as Orange Shirt Day, symbolizing the forced assimilation of Indigenous children. The day was made a statutory holiday for federal government employees and in several provinces starting in 2021, following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action.
