The Houston Texans became a team as the 32nd franchise of the NFL in 2002. They were officially awarded the franchise in 1999, and their creation filled the void left by the Houston Oilers, who relocated to Tennessee in 1997. The Texans played their inaugural season in 2002 and are the youngest franchise currently competing in the NFL.
