A Shar Pei is a medium-sized dog breed originally from southern China, known for its distinctive loose, wrinkled skin, especially when young, and a short, bristly coat. The breed has a broad muzzle, small triangular ears, and a unique blue-black tongue shared only with the Chow Chow. Shar Peis were traditionally used as property guardians and have a calm, loyal, and protective temperament. They have a sturdy build, with a heavily wrinkled face giving a "hippopotamus-like" look. Their coat can be various solid colors, and they require consistent training and socialization due to their independent and sometimes stubborn nature. The breed nearly went extinct in the 20th century but has been revived and remains a devoted family companion and watchful guard dog.
