Hobbits are described by J.R.R. Tolkien as a small people whose height ranges between 2 and 4 feet (0.6 to 1.2 meters), with the average height being about 3 feet 6 inches (1.1 meters). The three main types of hobbits—Harfoots, Fallohides, and Stoors—have some variations in height: Harfoots are typically around 3 feet 6 inches tall, Fallohides tend to be a bit taller and slimmer, closer to 4 feet, and Stoors are usually broader and slightly shorter than the others. Some exceptional hobbits, such as Bandobras Took, were recorded to be taller, reaching up to 4 feet 5 inches. This height range reflects hobbits as roughly half the height of average humans in Tolkien's Middle-earth.
