In California, a driver's license can be suspended if a driver accumulates:

- 8 points in 36 months.
These points result from moving violations or at-fault accidents tracked under California's Negligent Operator Treatment System (NOTS). The DMV will first send warning letters before suspending the license. For commercial drivers, points are multiplied by 1.5, so they reach suspension thresholds faster. License suspension typically lasts up to six months, with possible probation periods too. Points stay on the record for three years. This means if a driver hits any of these point thresholds within the respective time frames, their license will be suspended by the California DMV.
