how many hostages are still in gaza

As of late August 2025, there are approximately 48 to 50 hostages still held in Gaza , with about 20 believed to be alive. The remaining hostages include some who were abducted in the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack and others held previously. Israeli officials estimate that around 27 of those still in captivity may have died. Various releases, rescues, and exchanges have returned or liberated over 140 hostages since the initial abduction, but concerns remain high over the well-being of those still captive amid ongoing military operations in Gaza.
