The Potomac River has an average depth of about 24 feet (7.3 meters). The deepest point of the river is near Morgantown, Maryland, where it reaches a depth of approximately 107 feet (32.16 meters). A navigable channel with a maintained depth of 24 feet extends for about 108 miles in the tidal portion of the river below Washington, D.C. Upstream, the depth is generally shallower, often only a few feet deep before reaching downstream tidal areas where the river deepens significantly.
